A time for giving

We wanted to think a little differently this year about Christmas. We know that the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis are global problems, but we can all make a small contribution, and together that becomes pretty significant.

So here are our ideas for Christmas and the New Year.

Giving to nature

Helping nature out often involves doing less work and spending less money than we already do.

If you’re letting some or all your grass grow long, you’re saving the time and cost of either petrol or your electricity bill. And in doing so you’re making a huge difference to wildlife down at soil level and in that grass.

It’s the same with letting hedges grow taller. If the hedge has flowers and fruit, e.g. hawthorn, you’ll be saving time and money and pollinators and birds will thank you next year.

Why not consider a shabby-chic look for your garden for 2021?

And if you’re feeding and watching the birds this winter, here’s a guide on how to do it RSPB bird feeding guide.

Giving to the planet

Rethinking how we approach Christmas could make an enormous difference to our planet. I read recently that by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish, a very shocking idea. So, can we all do our bit to avoid that happening? Can we buy less plastic products? Can we buy our veg and fruit loose rather than those in plastic wrapping?

Money is going to be tighter for lots of us this year than ever before. It’s a good time to think smart both for our pocket and for our planet. Buying each other less presents is one way.

And buying second hand is another; charity shops can be a full of hidden treasures.

We can also encourage and support those shops that are making efforts to reduce plastic in their packaging and making it easier to recycle.

Another option is to find out more about the green and ethical credentials of the companies you’re buying your gifts from. Have a look at  Ethical Consumer to find out more.

Or choose to buy gifts from charities, such as those linked on our website and you know your money is going to great causes.

Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
